Mario Paroli Transforms the Bic Cristal Into a Giant Lamp

To celebrate the enduring legacy of one of the world’s most recognizable everyday objects, designer Mario Paroli and Italian design brand Seletti have transformed the iconic Bic Cristal pen into an oversized lighting piece. Unveiled at Maison&Objet in Paris, the project serves as the final chapter in Bic’s celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of its legendary ballpoint pen.

The new design, simply titled Bic Lamp, magnifies the familiar writing instrument to an extraordinary scale. Measuring 178 centimeters in length, roughly twelve times larger than the original, it faithfully preserves the proportions and visual identity established by Marcel Bich when he introduced the pen in 1950. Despite its dramatic enlargement, the object remains instantly recognizable.

Rather than containing ink, the transparent hexagonal body now houses an integrated LED lighting system that emits a soft, warm glow. The transformation is subtle yet effective, turning a utilitarian object into a functional design statement while retaining the characteristics that made the pen famous.

Details such as the colored cap, end piece, and printed Bic logo remain intact, reinforcing the connection to the original product. The lamp is available in the classic black, blue, and red colorways associated with the Bic Cristal, with matching power cords extending from the structure.

The collection includes floor, wall-mounted, and suspended versions, allowing the oversized pen to inhabit interiors in different ways. Produced from polycarbonate and high-density polyethylene, the materials echo those used in the manufacturing of the original pen, further strengthening the relationship between the everyday object and its new design incarnation.

More than a nostalgic tribute, the project highlights the cultural significance of the Bic Cristal. Over the decades, the pen has become a universal design icon, finding a place in classrooms, offices, museums, and homes around the world. By enlarging it to architectural proportions, Paroli and Seletti invite viewers to reconsider the influence of an object so familiar that it often goes unnoticed.

The result is a playful yet thoughtful design piece that blurs the boundaries between product design, pop culture, and functional art, proof that even the most ordinary objects can become extraordinary when viewed from a different perspective.
