Sculptural Design Meets Cat Furniture in Gustaf Westman’s Latest Creation

Swedish designer Gustaf Westman has turned his attention to an unlikely design category, reimagining the traditional cat tree as a bold sculptural object for contemporary interiors. The result, called the Chunky Cat Tree, brings the designer’s instantly recognizable aesthetic into the world of pet furniture.

The piece joins Westman’s growing family of Chunky products, a collection known for its oversized curves, playful proportions, and vibrant color palette. Drawing inspiration from his popular Blob Sofa, introduced in 2023, the cat tree adopts the same stacked, rounded forms that have become a signature of his work.

Rather than treating pet accessories as purely functional items, Westman approached the project as both a design object and a comfortable environment for cats. The goal was to create something that feels equally at home in a carefully curated living space while still meeting the needs of its four-legged users.

Built around a three-legged base, the structure features several elevated platforms positioned at different heights, allowing multiple cats to lounge, climb, or observe their surroundings at the same time. Its soft, padded surfaces and rounded silhouettes reinforce the playful character that defines much of Westman’s work.

Produced to order in Sweden, the Chunky Cat Tree is available in a range of wool upholstery colors, including red, yellow, purple, blue, and cobalt blue. The vivid finishes further emphasize its role as a statement piece rather than a conventional pet accessory.

Since launching his studio in 2020, Westman has developed a reputation for creating furniture, ceramics, glassware, and home objects that balance humor with craftsmanship. His designs often blur the line between functional products and collectible pieces, using materials such as wood, metal, glass, and ceramics shaped into soft, almost cartoon-like forms.

The designer’s fascination with playful everyday objects has produced a variety of unconventional creations over the years, from a curling-stone-inspired snack bowl to a baguette carrier shaped like a handbag. With the Chunky Cat Tree, Westman applies the same philosophy to pet furniture, proving that even the most practical household items can become objects of design interest.

More than just a place for cats to perch, climb, or nap, the project offers a fresh perspective on how pet products can contribute to the visual identity of a home rather than disappear into the background.
