Designed by AZUT, the Asian Games Cricket Field at Zhejiang University of Technology redefines the role of a contemporary sports venue, positioning architecture as a meeting point between cultural memory, public life and the surrounding landscape.

The stadium draws its identity from one of China’s most recognisable symbols—the traditional red lantern. Rather than reproducing its form literally, the design translates its sense of rhythm, lightness and celebration into sweeping architectural gestures that give the building a distinctive civic presence. The result is a structure that feels deeply connected to its cultural context while speaking through a confident contemporary vocabulary.

Beyond the boundaries of the playing field, the project unfolds as an extension of the university campus. Landscaped gardens, shaded pedestrian routes and generous public spaces encourage movement, gathering and everyday use, allowing the stadium to remain active beyond the life of major sporting events. It is conceived not as a monument to a single competition, but as a place that continues to support education, recreation and community interaction.

This long-term vision defines the project as much as its architecture. By combining cultural references with environmental sensitivity and flexible public programming, AZUT demonstrates how sports infrastructure can evolve into meaningful civic space—one that serves both the city and its people long after the final match has been played.
