Arena Under Bridge by Atelier XÜK

Arena Under Bridge reimagines one of Shanghai’s overlooked infrastructural voids as a living public landscape, demonstrating how architecture can emerge from the smallest of interventions. Created for the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, the project transforms the residual space beneath a vehicular bridge along the Huangpu River into a place where movement, performance and everyday urban life naturally converge.

For decades, the riverfront has served as one of Shanghai’s most active social corridors. As daylight fades, its promenades fill with dancers, musicians, runners and neighbours gathering in a familiar daily ritual. Yet beneath the bridge itself, a compressed concrete passage separated by a flood-control wall remained disconnected from this collective rhythm. Rather than treating the site as a problem to conceal, the designers approached it as an opportunity to reconnect fragmented pieces of the city.

The intervention relies on a remarkably restrained architectural language. A carefully choreographed sequence of platforms, steps and railings guides pedestrians diagonally over the flood barrier, creating a new ground-level connection that links the Huangpu waterfront with the surrounding public spaces and the neighbouring Zhangjiatang River. Instead of imposing a monumental gesture, the project quietly redirects movement, allowing the city’s circulation to evolve through subtle spatial cues.

Light became one of the project’s defining materials. During the late afternoon, sunlight slips through the narrow gap between the bridge structure and the flood wall, projecting a luminous line across the concrete floor. Rather than ignoring this fleeting phenomenon, the architects embraced it as the conceptual heart of the intervention. The once-dark underpass is transformed into a space animated by changing light, shifting perspectives and the rhythm of passing bodies.

The architecture also amplifies the site’s existing social life. Broad steps double as informal seating, while elevated platforms become stages for performances, rehearsals and spontaneous gatherings. Beneath the bridge, the acoustics of the exposed concrete create an unexpectedly resonant environment where conversations, music and dance acquire a heightened physical presence. Integrated lighting extends these moments into the evening, turning an ordinary infrastructural space into a vibrant civic setting without overwhelming its industrial character.

What makes Arena Under Bridge particularly compelling is its refusal to exist solely as an exhibition. Since its completion, local residents have gradually incorporated the intervention into their daily routines. Musicians rehearse beneath the bridge, dancers occupy the illuminated floor, and pedestrians increasingly choose the new route across the flood wall, allowing the project to become part of the city’s ordinary choreography rather than a temporary installation.

Set against the backdrop of Shanghai’s rapidly changing urban landscape, the project also preserves something increasingly rare. As former industrial districts continue to disappear beneath new developments, the rough textures of infrastructure, open riverbanks and leftover urban spaces carry a memory that polished redevelopment often erases. Here, architecture does not attempt to overwrite that history. Instead, it works alongside concrete, vegetation, water and movement, revealing the quiet beauty already embedded within the site.

More than an architectural intervention, Arena Under Bridge proposes another way of understanding public space: one where infrastructure is no longer simply crossed, but inhabited; where the city is experienced not through spectacle, but through everyday encounters shaped by light, landscape and collective presence.
